The bars show the amount of annual funding for research and development to understand, treat and develop technologies against neglected tropical diseases. These are a group of diseases that tend to be common in tropical regions of the world and disproportionately affect the poorest. Millions of people each year are affected by diseases such as dengue, leishmaniasis and trachoma — but R&D for them is very limited, with amounts under $100 million globally. For trachoma, which can cause permanent blindness, annual funding is the lowest — below $200,000. Without funding, it’s very difficult to develop new medicines, vaccines, and technologies to reduce suffering and disability from these diseases. In contrast, large public health initiatives have helped fund research for some diseases — HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, malaria, and COVID-19 — which has [saved millions of lives](https://ourworldindata.org/art-lives-saved). By investing in R&D for neglected tropical diseases, the world can make much faster progress in reducing their impact and improving the quality of life of millions of people affected by these diseases.
