More recent data on the primary energy mix is shown in the chart below. Even by 1970, coal still accounted for almost half of the UK's energy. Since then, natural gas and to a lesser extent nuclear and [renewables](https://owid.cloud/renewable-energy), have displaced coal in the mix. By 2019, coal's share of primary energy supply had fallen to around 3 percent. The UK government has announced plans to [completely phase out coal](https://www.carbonbrief.org/countdown-to-2025-tracking-the-uk-coal-phase-out) in the UK by 2025. Once a global leader in coal production, the UK has been undergoing a major shift away from it in recent decades.</p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is a transition to celebrate: of all the energy sources, coal has the largest negative <a href=\"https://ourworldindata.org/what-is-the-safest-form-of-energy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">health and environmental impacts in both the long and short-term</a>: per unit energy it kills the greatest number from local air pollution, and emits the most <a href=\"https://ourworldindata.org/co2-and-other-greenhouse-gas-emissions\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">carbon dioxide (CO<sub>2</sub>) emissions</a>. In the last few years, <a href=\"https://ourworldindata.org/grapher/annual-co-emissions-per-country?tab=chart&country=GBR\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">UK CO<sub>2</sub> emissions have fallen</a> to levels last seen in the late 19th century: the decline in coal <a href=\"https://www.carbonbrief.org/analysis-uk-carbon-emissions-in-2017-fell-to-levels-last-seen-in-1890\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">was the largest driver</a> of this reduction.</p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here I document the rise of UK coal until the early 20th century and the death of coal since then through a series of five charts.</p>\n\n\n\n<h3>1) Coal production peaked at 292 million tonnes in 1913. It’s now 150 times lower.</h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Coal production in the UK \u2014 at least by today’s standards \u2014 was low throughout the 1700s. Output grew rapidly throughout the 19th century, and peaked at 292 million tonnes in 1913. This is shown in the chart below. After volatile but relatively high production throughout the 19th and first half of the 20th century, we see a fast decline from 1960 onwards.</p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>In 2019, annual production was only 2 million tonnes \u2014 150 times lower than the 1913 peak. UK coal production is now back to levels last seen more than 300 years ago. </strong></p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since 2001, coal imports have been higher than domestic production. But imports are now declining as well: since 2016 imports have been around 10 million tonnes or less.</p>\n\n\n\n<figure><iframe style=\"width: 100%; height: 600px; border: 0px none;\" src=\"https://ourworldindata.org/grapher/coal-output-uk-tonnes\"></iframe></figure>\n\n\n\n<h3>2) Deepmine coal production has effectively fallen to zero</h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The techniques required to extract coal depend on its position in the subsurface. Extraction of coal deposits at depth in the earth is, straightforwardly, called ‘deepmined coal’; extraction at or close to the surface is ‘opencast coal’.</p>\n\n\n\n<p>Deepmined coal dominated most of the UK’s production history. In fact, opencast coal extraction was negligible until the 1940s. But as we see in the chart below, from the 1960s onwards there has been a continued decline in deepmined coal.</p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Kellingley colliery, the UK’s last deep coal mine closed in 2015. Deepmined coal production has effectively stopped since 2016. </strong>Output from <em>opencast </em>mines was still 2 to 3 million tonnes in the last few years.</p>\n\n\n\n<figure><iframe style=\"width: 100%; height: 600px; border: 0px none;\" src=\"https://ourworldindata.org/grapher/coal-uk-opencast-deep-mine\"></iframe></figure>\n\n\n\n<h3>3) At its 1920 peak, UK coal employed 1.2 million. It’s now 2000 times lower.</h3>\n\n\n\n<p>For two centuries the coal industry was a major source of employment in the UK. <strong>Employment in coal peaked in 1920 at 1.19 million workers: more than <a href=\"https://ourworldindata.org/grapher/share-of-the-workforce-employed-in-the-coal-industry-united-kingdom\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">1-in-20 of the total UK workforce</a></strong>.</p>\n\n\n\n<p>Employment remained high throughout the first half of the 20th century. But there has been a continued decline from the 1960s onwards. <strong>By 2019, this had fallen to 699 workers \u2014 around 2000 times lower than the industry’s peak</strong>.</p>\n\n\n\n<figure><iframe style=\"width: 100%; height: 600px; border: 0px none;\" src=\"https://ourworldindata.org/grapher/employment-in-the-coal-industry-in-the-united-kingdom\"></iframe></figure>\n\n\n\n<h3>4) Once a diverse energy supplier, coal is now primarily used for electricity</h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Historically, coal was the energy supply for a range of end uses: in the chart below we see that as recently as the mid-20th century, coal was used in industry, railways, for gas production, and heating in homes. But as these technologies \u2014 heating, cooking, railways \u2014 became increasingly electrified, coal’s role narrowed to electricity production.</p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the 1940s, electricity accounted for only 12 percent of UK coal consumption.
